A few weeks ago we announced the 12 students in the running for the title of Home Learning College Student of the Year 2011.
Three students were shortlisted in each of our four faculties, after which we chose one winner in each category. From those four worthy candidates we then selected our overall Student of the Year.
Home Learning College Student of the Year: Ruth Fletcher, Certificate in Business Management
Ruth has been profoundly deaf since birth, and enrolled on our Business Management course as part of her plan to set up a business supporting the deaf community in and around Bolton. Ruth graduated with a distinction and has since launched her company ‘How to Support Deaf People Within Your Workplace’, supported by start-up funding from social entrepreneur charity UnLtd.
Ruth is our Vocational and Business Studies and overall Student of the Year and she receives £100 in Amazon vouchers and a certificate of achievement in recognition of her success.
Accounting Student of the Year: Rozsa Szujer, AAT Level 2 and 3
Rozsa enrolled on AAT Level 2 last August and proceeded to whizz through her course, achieving top marks throughout with minimal support from her tutor. Having completed her level 2 exams in June she has since enrolled on our AAT Level 3 and 4 combined course and is continuing to make great progress.
Rozsa receives £50 in Amazon vouchers plus a certificate of achievement.
Bookkeeping Student of the Year: John Withers, ICB Level 2 Associate
After being made redundant from his role as a business analyst last year, John enrolled on our ICB Level 2 Associate course with the aim of changing career. He has since completed his course – receiving A grades throughout – and passed his Level 1, Level 2 Manual and Level 2 Computerised Bookkeeping exams with flying colours. John has achieved this in nine months while caring for his mother who is in and out of hospital on a regular basis.
John receives £50 in Amazon vouchers and a certificate of achievement.
IT & Web Student of the Year: Simon Winstanley, Oracle Java Programming
Simon is on the Virtual Learning Community on a daily basis. Since he enrolled last February he has attended every live class and is the most active student on the forum, asking and answering questions and posting helpful tips for other students. Having successfully passed his Java exam in October, Simon is looking forward to starting our CompTIA Network+ course with a view to broadening his IT skills.
Simon receives £50 in Amazon vouchers and a certificate of achievement.
The remaining shortlisted students receive £25 in Amazon vouchers:
• Joy Harrison – AAT level 2
• Ian Martin – AAT Level 2
• Gerry Hoff – ICB Level 2 Associate, Level 3 Manual Bookkeeping
• Celia Stevens – ICB Level 2 Manual Bookkeeping
• Lorraine Crusham – Diploma in Criminology
• Chanelle Farrell – Diploma in Child Psychology

Congratulations and best wishes go out to all of our shortlisted candidates, and to the rest of our students who continue to work so hard and prove the value of gaining professional qualifications.
