As debate rages about the underlying causes of recent nationwide unrest, almost a quarter of British adults (24 per cent) freely admit their behaviour at school has negatively impacted on their life. The findings are released as part of Home Learning College’s ‘Welcome Back to Learning’ campaign, which aims to highlight the value of continued education and encourage people to gain new qualifications.
The survey was conducted among 2,000 adults who were asked to discuss their conduct at school and how this has impacted on their later life. While 21 per cent of women said poor behaviour has had a negative effect, this rose significantly among men to 28 per cent.
Older respondents showed the greatest level of regret, with 26 per cent of the over 55s admitting earlier bad behaviour has limited their adult achievement. In contrast, 40 per cent of adults reported that working hard in their younger years has paid off and led to a great career.
Home Learning College specialises in offering distance learning courses from accredited awarding bodies. Each course leads to a recognised professional qualification across a range of subjects including accounting and bookkeeping, IT and web, business, child care and social care.
“Our research shows that a significant number of adults believe a lack of focus at school has left an indelible mark on their adult lives,” comments Dave Snow, Academic Director at Home Learning College. “Leaving school with few qualifications and a track record for bad behaviour certainly does put people at a disadvantage. However, the doors to education and self-improvement are never permanently closed.
“With the new academic year fast approaching, our ‘Welcome Back to Learning’ campaign is designed to show people how easy it is to go back to school this autumn, and engage in further study that will have a positive impact on their future prospects. If the thought of returning to the classroom is less than appealing then distance learning is the ideal way to stay in control of the study experience and combine learning with existing work and family commitments.”
