Ongoing global economic woes mean that British workers are entering the New Year with significantly less optimism than at the end of 2010. Research conducted by Home Learning College shows that only 27 per cent of the population see their career prospects changing for the better in 2012, compared to 49 per cent in a similar survey last year. At the other end of the spectrum, 30 per cent think their professional lives will suffer over the next 12 months.
The highest levels of positivity were recorded in the North West, where 31 per cent of residents predict improved career prospects over the coming year. Optimism is lowest in Northern Ireland, followed by the North East of England, at 15 and 20 per cent respectively.
Almost a third of the population (29 per cent) blame a lack of qualifications for trapping them in their current situation, while a quarter plan to undertake further study in 2012 to boost their professional prospects. This is even higher in the North West and West Midlands where 30% of residents are resolved to enhance their educational credentials.
Home Learning College offers distance learning courses in a range of subjects, including accounting, bookkeeping, IT, web, business, child care and social care. All courses come with expert tutorial support and lead to recognised professional qualifications that enhance professional progression.
“This is the third December in a row where we have asked people to share their career predictions for the coming year,” says Dave Snow, Academic Director at Home Learning College. “After a rise in optimism at the end of last year, we have seen a return to uncertainty among large sectors of the population, thanks to ongoing economic issues at home and overseas.
“On a more positive note, our research reveals that many people are determined to take action by engaging in further study and gaining new qualifications that will help them take the next step in their career. To support potential students in this endeavour we are running a special offer until the end of December where people can get started on any distance learning course for just £1, allowing them to get a head start on those New Year’s resolutions.”
