Home Learning College 10 Things To Consider

Thinking about the sort of job or career you want will help keep you motivated in your studies. This section is designed to help you decide what it is you really want, keep you focused, and help you prepare for your interview.

To help you stay grounded, we cover the basic things you need to think about when you return to work, set up your own business or negotiate a pay rise. But dream big and you truly will achieve your heart's desire.

10 Things To Consider

It's always going to be a tough decision. But when you want to change your career for all the right reasons it can be a lot easier than you think.

  1. Do use the tools that are available

Personality testing and skills assessment can all help you build a picture of your particular strengths, skills and personal preferences. A picture that can help you make the right career move. Try our tools to find out your preferred style - and be prepared to be surprised!

  2. Don't pick a job because someone you know is doing well in it

Of course it's a great idea to go into a field that is growing, but just because it suits your friend/brother/neighbour does not mean it will suit you.

  3. Do actively build your skills

Training and development will help you bridge knowledge gaps.

  4. Do research the job

An interesting job title could mask what is, on a day to day basis, fairly mundane work. And of course the opposite is true. Find out more about what jobs entail from day to day, then ask yourself if that would be interesting and stimulating for you.

  5. Do research potential employers and industries

Consider what kind of business you could work for in your area? Are you prepared to move to find work in your preferred field? Is it a growth area or an industry in decline? Use questions like these to help you make a wise and confident choice.

  6. Do consider whether working for yourself is an option

Being self-employed means that you are your own boss - which gives you freedom to change and shape your business as you want to. But its certainly not an easy option. Most self-employed people work long hours and have to be flexible. They have to be able to handle a variety of job functions - doing the accounts, managing staff, marketing and so on. See our 'setting up your own business' section for ideas and suggestions.

  7. Do weigh up your salary expectations

Are you prepared to take a pay cut? What is the earning potential in this field? Do you have a certain salary requirement, or do you have dependents that you need to consider when making a move?

  8. Do ask for help

You'll find lots of advice available online, but also consider asking former colleagues and bosses, as well as friends and contacts working in other businesses. A short conversation can offer surprising insights, and give you fresh new perspectives which may help you decide.

  9. Do try voluntary work

It can give you good experience ... and can boost your self-belief. It can also give you a flavour of what working somewhere else, on something else, is like. It's also a way of meeting new people and expanding your network.

  10. And above all....Don't give up

You've already come a long way. Recognising that you want to change is often the hardest part. Now that you've made this decision keep it clear in your mind. Visualise your new job, see yourself in your new career, and really try hard to imagine what it will feel like - how satisfying and rewarding it will be. Doing this will help keep you focused and motivated.

Thousands of others have done this - so can you!
