A comprehensive introduction to working with children in schools
If you want to develop a career as a teaching assistant, then our Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools course provides an opportunity to develop the required skills and knowledge.
You will learn to support teachers with the delivery of a school curriculum, while helping children and young people to develop self-esteem, independence and abilities for learning. You will also gain professional and technical skills, plus an understanding of the importance of positive relationships within a school.
Underpin your studies with practical work experience
Our Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools course covers a wide variety of topics and subjects including how to prepare and maintain a safe learning environment, promoting and encouraging appropriate pupil behaviour and using ICT to support pupils' learning. You will also complete a 50 hour work placement*, giving you a chance to put your new knowledge to the test in a real life environment.
*The student is responsible for organising this placement.
I took the decision to obtain my Teaching Assistant qualification through Home Learning college as I could study when I wanted and complete the course in my own time. The tutors were helpful and gave detailed feedback after each assignment which helped me to plan properly. The ability to ask advice from other students on the forum was also a great help and I was even able to offer support to others. I am now lucky to be doing a job I love."

The NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is an ideal qualification for those wishing to consolidate and enhance their child development knowledge or ability to work as a Teaching Assistant with a nationally recognised qualification.
Having gained your final qualification you will be able to apply for jobs as a Teaching Assistant with a salary of up to £17,735* per annum.
Teaching assistants generally work alongside a teacher in the classroom, making sure pupils get the most out of lessons. This might include helping with practical exercises or preparing the classroom and clearing up afterwards, thereby allowing the teacher to focus on delivering the lesson.
NCFE is one of the UK’s fastest growing national awarding bodies, designing and awarding qualifications that are nationally recognised to meet the needs of learners and employers. The NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools has been accredited by the qualifications regulators for England and Wales and is part of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
The NQF outlines Level 3 qualifications as equivalent to A Levels, denoting and recognising the ability to gain and, where relevant, apply a range of knowledge, skills and understanding. Learning at this level is appropriate for people wishing to go to university, work independently, or in some areas supervise and train others in their field of work.
(Note: Legislation regarding working with young people is different in Scotland. The CWDC does not regulate in Scotland, therefore this NCFE qualification is not recognised there. CWDC accreditation is recognised in England, Wales and Northern Ireland).
This course also supports entry onto the NVQ in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools and progression to Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) status, which would allow you to occasionally lead lessons.
