Study tips to help you succeed

Over the years, thousands of our students have gained new professional qualifications, so we know how to help you get the most from your distance learning experience.

Read on for handy study tips and advice from our experienced tutors.

Establish a routine

When learning from home it can be helpful to turn studying into a habit by setting aside dedicated time each day or week. This may be challenging at first, but after a while it will start to feel perfectly natural, even effortless.

Understand your learning style

People’s learning styles vary dramatically, so what works for someone else may not work for you. For example, you may be the kind of person who is more alert in the morning, in which case it makes sense to maximise that time. Similarly, if you learn better later in the day then plan the majority of your study during the evening. If you’re not sure what time will suit you best then have a think about your current daily routine. Do you leap out of bed with your mind active and engaged or does your brain tend to warm up throughout the day?

Be disciplined

If you can, write down your study schedule for the coming week using a chart or your regular diary. Then treat each study session as if it were an important business meeting - the kind of appointment you'd never dream of breaking!

Study in short but frequent stretches

Research shows that it's better to study in short bursts rather than cram everything into one long session – between 30 to 40 minutes works best for most people. Take a five minute break at the end of that time, after which you'll be ready to continue. Don't stay seated during your break - stand up, stretch, walk around and get the blood flowing.

Ask for help when you need it

Although you’re learning from home there is absolutely no reason to struggle on alone if you get stuck. Tutorial support is always available during working hours* and the Virtual Learning Community is designed to help you find guidance and advice at any time of the day or night, whether by accessing frequently asked questions or chatting to your fellow students – who may have valuable study tips of their own!
