Midlands student and tutor triumph at Home Learning College's annual awards

The UK's leading home study provider announces UK Student and Tutor of the Year

Picture of Student and Tutor of the Year trophiesHome Learning College, the UK's leading home study provider, today announces the winners of its Tutor and Student of the Year awards. Launched in 2007, the awards are designed to recognise the hard work and dedication of its students and tutors throughout the calendar year. The certificates and trophies were presented by Home Learning College at a ceremony in Covent Garden.

The winner of the 2008 Student of the Year award is Kay Shaw, 42, of the West Midlands. Kay enrolled on a home study course to gain a recognised qualification in IT. She began her specialist Microsoft Application course in February - completing it within a matter of months, when it would usually take approximately two-years to finish.

Kay will now start her new role as ICT Training Officer at Dudley College in December, and says she has Home Learning College to thank for that. Kay comments: “Home Learning College's reputation stood out. It is a highly credible and accredited organisation and I am very grateful to them for helping me further my career. I am over the moon to win this award, and it's a clear demonstration that if you are really determined to progress in your career, there's nothing stopping you.”

Kay was nominated by her Home Learning College tutor and beat over 65,000 other students to the award. After sitting three exams in one day, she received grade A's throughout her results.

This year's Tutor of the Year accolade has been awarded to Beverly Roberts of Birmingham - who now teaches Bookkeeping and Payroll, whilst continuing to learn other disciplines at the college.

Beverly had previously been a Catering Manager, and shortly after completing her exams, a senior member of the Home Learning College team asked to see her CV. Fourteen months later; Beverly has been awarded the Tutor of the Year award.

She comments: “Home Learning College stood out as a great employer because of the flexibility it offers and the added benefit that I could learn at home whilst looking after the kids and grandchildren! Winning this award is a great achievement and I'm delighted to have had my work and progression recognised.”

Home Learning College's Academic Director, Dave Snow, comments: “We are thrilled that we are able to award these two dedicated individuals for their hard work and commitment. I hope their accomplishments set the standard for all those coming through for next year's awards. It's a great example of what can really be achieved and I wish them both continued success in the future.”
