The AAT Level 2 course (Foundation) comprises the first stage on the AAT qualification pathway. How to gain the AAT Level 2 qualification

Level 2 accounting training will equip you for an entry level role in an Accounting or Finance department. By the end of the course you will have a solid understanding of manual and computerised accounts and how to use them in a practical setting.

The AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting (Foundation) consists of five separate units: .

  1. Bookkeeping Transactions
  2. Bookkeeping Controls 
  3. Elements of Costing
  4. Work Effectively in Finance
  5. Using Accounting Software.

You will be provided with textbooks for each unit (also given as eBooks through the Virtual Learning Campus).

Whilst there are no formal entry requirements, to enrol on our Level 2 Certificate in Accounting course (Foundation) , we recommend that you have a basic GCSE qualification in English and Mathematics or a keen interest in Accounting. We also recommend that students take the AAT’s Skill Check to measure their prior knowledge.

Before you enrol on this Home Learning College course, please ensure that you have read and understood the prerequisites below:

    • You have a valid UK address (AAT qualifications cannot be studied outside the UK, Channel Islands or Isle of Man)
    • You are over the age of 18 or have a third party payee for any financial agreement
    • You have a solid grasp of the English language. IELTS 5.5 or equivalent is required if English is not your first language
    • You have access to a computer and the internet throughout your study period
    • It is essential that you have a PC with the Windows XP operating system or higher to run the Sage software
    • You have basic computer skills in order to navigate our Virtual Learning Campus

The Level 2 Certificate forms the first of three stages in the full AAT Accounting Qualification (AQ2013) pathway. Completing the AAT pathway is approximately equivalent to the first year of an honours degree and allows you to use the letters MAAT after your name and to go on to study with British Chartered Accountancy bodies. AAT is the only professional qualification that allows progression to Chartered status from entry level.

Progress through the course

You’re now ready to go. There is an induction area which provides a course overview and tips for online study. In a typical week we offer a host of materials to help you learn : set reading followed by a short quiz, worked examples and knowledge checks and a live class every 2-3 weeks. Be sure to join the live classes when you can – your tutor will tailor each class to the results of your knowledge checks, focusing on the areas you most need help. You and your fellow students have the opportunity to ask any questions and you can always watch the recording later if you need to.

Take your mid-unit assessment online

Submit your answers online with comprehensive feedback sent back within 7 days. This is a powerful tool for tracking your progress towards the final exam and gives your tutor all they need to further tailor your course.

Take assessments at the end of each unit

We have built a full 2 weeks revision into each unit to best prepare you for success at each stage. We will book the assessment for you at a convenient location in line with your progress through the unit.

Sit your synoptic assessment at the end of the level

The new AAT syllabus introduces a synoptic assessment at each level, in addition to Computer Based Tests. This is to demonstrate the skills and knowledge across everything that has been learnt so far, rather than just one unit at a time. Our courses our built to support this new type of assessment ensuring you arrive at the synoptic exam at the optimum time after completing our dedicated synoptic revision unit - giving you every possible chance of success.
